Cohen to deliver ninth annual Levi Watkins Jr. Lecture
Jordan Cohen, M.D., professor of Medicine and Public Health at George Washington University, will deliver the ninth annual Levi Watkins Jr. Lecture at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in 208 Light Hall.
The topic of Cohen's talk is: “Diversity: Putting Old Wine in a New Bottle,” a review of the "old" strategies and rationales for attracting and admitting more under-represented minority medical students, and suggestions for approaches that may be more effective.
Cohen served as president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) from 1994 to 2006.
He currently serves as chairman of the board of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine. Cohen also serves on the board of the Morehouse School of Medicine and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.
He has spoken extensively on the need to promote greater racial and ethnic diversity in medicine, to uphold professional and scientific values, and to transform the nation's health care system.
The lecture honors Levi Watkins Jr., M.D., noted cardiac surgeon and the first African-American student to be admitted to and graduate from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Following the lecture there will be an unveiling of the portrait of Steven Gabbe, M.D., dean of VUSM from 2001 to 2008.
