Gografe to chair advisory committee for lab animal science association
Sylvia Gografe, D.V.M., Ph.D., assistant professor of Pathology and director of the Office of Animal Welfare Assurance, has been appointed chair of the scientific advisory committee of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
In this capacity, Gografe will lead the committee's efforts to develop and implement programs to enhance the quality and breadth of science within the organization; develop programs to encourage scientific development of young investigators in comparative medicine and laboratory animal science; and administer the Grants for Laboratory Animal Science program.
She will serve for one year.
“It is a tremendous honor to represent Vanderbilt University on this committee,” said Gografe. “I fully expect that our renowned research program will provide valuable insights and best practices in the ethical conduct of research for the scientific community, and in educating the public on the extraordinary benefits research plays in human health.”
Gografe joined Vanderbilt in 2007 to lead the newly formed Office of Animal Welfare Assurance. She earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in Germany. She holds professional certifications from Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research (PRIM&R), is a diplomate with the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine and holds licensure for veterinary medicine in the United States and Europe.
