Magazine names Joers among rising health care management stars
Modern Healthcare has named Barbara Joers, chief operating officer of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, a 2009 “Up and Comer,” the magazine's annual program honoring rising young stars under age 40 in the health care management field.
“Barbara has dedicated her career to improving the ability of our health care system to provide safe, great quality and efficient care to our patients, and we're fortunate to have her leadership,” said Kevin B. Churchwell, M.D., chief executive officer and executive director of Children's Hospital.
“I would have never been recognized if I didn't work with a team that has allowed me to be innovative and take risks,” Joers said.
“Ever since coming to Vanderbilt, I've valued opportunities to work across the Medical Center and University on projects. That is what has made our initiatives so successful — Vanderbilt has unique resources that aren't available at other institutions.”
Joers joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2000 as director of Performance Management and Improvement.
She led the complex move to the new Children's Hospital in 2004. She has implemented new programs for case management, designed handoff procedures for patients when changing areas and created the Access Center, which handles all incoming calls from physicians and hospitals to seamlessly integrate services.
She holds a master's degree in Health Services Administration dedicated in Health Services Management and Policy from George Washington University.
An editorial review board of the magazine's senior editors reviewed 139 nominations and selected 12 recipients to be recognized in the 23rd annual listing.
