Nobel Laureate Kandel to deliver Sutherland Lecture
Eric Kandel, M.D., a leader in the field of memory research, will give the 2009 Earl W. Sutherland Lecture on at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, in 208 Light Hall.
Kandel, a professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and director of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science at Columbia University in New York, shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries concerning the molecular basis of signal transduction and memory storage in neurons.
His lecture, titled “Molecular Mechanisms for the Persistence of Memory Storage,” is sponsored by the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. The lectureship was established in honor of Earl Sutherland, M.D., a former member of the department who was awarded the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries related to cellular signaling and hormone action.
A reception will follow immediately after the lecture in the north lobby of Light Hall. For more information, contact Sharron Francis, Ph.D., at 322-4383 or Jackie Corbin, Ph.D., at 322-4384.
