Noted author Skloot to speak, sign books

Author Rebecca Skloot will discuss her recently released book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 7, in 208 Light Hall.

The book chronicles the life of Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman whose cancerous cells — taken without her knowledge — have been responsible for some of the most remarkable scientific advances in the past half century.

Lacks’ cells were the first human cells grown in culture and are still alive today, more than 60 years after her death.

A book signing will follow Skloot’s lecture, which is sponsored by the Office of Diversity in Medical Education and the Dean’s Lecture Series.
