Noted science reporter Kolata to speak at VUMC
Gina Kolata, award-winning science reporter for The New York Times, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture — “Discovering Science Stories: What Makes Them News?” — at 4 p.m., Jan. 27 in 208 Light Hall.
Kolata earned her bachelor's degree in microbiology and master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland. She also studied molecular biology as a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Kolata's entry into science journalism came in 1971, when she joined Science magazine as a copy editor. She went on to serve as a writer and then senior writer for Science until joining The New York Times in 1987, where she has written more than 1,000 articles that have appeared in nearly every section of the paper.
Kolata has also written for a variety of magazines, including Smithsonian, Discover, Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan and is the author of several books, including national bestseller “Flu” and, more recently, “Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss and the Myths and Realities of Dieting.”
Her lecture is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs.
