Nylander named chief of surgical services at the VA

William A. Nylander, Jr., M.D.

William A. Nylander, Jr., M.D., has been named Chief, Surgical Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS).

Nylander received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1977. After surgery training at Vanderbilt Medical Center, he became a staff surgeon at TVHS, Vanderbilt University, and St. Thomas Hospital. Nylander was a Transplant Fellow at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in 1984 and he received a Master of Business Administration in 1989 at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

In 2001, Nylander was appointed Chief, Transplant Service at TVHS. He is currently the Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of General Surgery at Vanderbilt, a role he will continue while Chief Surgical Service at TVHS.

Nylander is a member of many professional societies and serves on numerous committees at TVHS and Vanderbilt.
