Race for the Cure cancer fundraiser set
The fall race event season for cancer charities is about to begin and organizers are set to kick-off Vanderbilt's Race for the Cure team-building plans.
Faculty and staff, as well as patients and cancer survivors, are invited to join Team Vanderbilt for the 19th annual Greater Nashville Race for the Cure, Saturday, Oct. 9, at Maryland Farms in Brentwood.
Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) is one of the sponsors for the Race for the Cure, a breast cancer awareness and fundraising event for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and will field Team Vanderbilt, representing the entire Vanderbilt University community.
The annual event features a 5K race and one-mile walk and is one of the largest cancer fundraisers in the Nashville area. This year, canine friends can also trot along or meet new friends in the Dog Park for the Cure.
Team Vanderbilt will be vying for one of the leadership awards at the 2010 event. Last year, Team Vanderbilt won the largest health care team award, with 340 registered participants, and raised more than $27,000 for breast cancer research and services.
To share information with VUMC staff at satellite facilities, there will be an informational breakfast from 8:30-9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the lobby area at VICC Cool Springs.
In addition to Team Vanderbilt activities, staff from VICC, including the REACH for Survivorship Program and the Vanderbilt Breast Center, will participate in the event as education volunteers and exhibitors.

Schedule of events, Oct. 9:
• 6:30 a.m. — Race Village opens
• 8 a.m. — Service of Hope in Maryland Way Park
• 8:15 a.m. — Parade of Pink Line-Up — from the Survivor Tent
• 9 a.m. — 5K race participants begin
• 9:15 a.m. — 5K walk participants begin
• 9:30 a.m. — 1 Mile Fun Walk/Run starts in Maryland Way Park
• 10:30 a.m. — Celebration and Awards Ceremony begins in Maryland Way Park, featuring Sony recording artists.
