Songs from the Heart event set
Singer-songwriter Tricia Walker believes great songs happen when songwriters seek to find the courage to be vulnerable in exposing their deepest feelings on the page.
Cancer survivors, family members and professional caregivers will have a chance to express their own deep feelings about living with cancer when their songs are performed, Friday, June 26, during the annual “Songs from the Heart” concert.
Walker, with musical and vocal accompaniment by Bill Sinclair, will present the songs, which spring from the complex emotions of those who are dealing with cancer.
“This process starts every year when we invite a group of cancer survivors, families and caregivers to gather for a songwriting workshop at Gilda's Club,” said Cindy Tinker, social worker for Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
“All of these folks have great stories to tell. Walker takes their words, and in just two days turns them into songs for the concert. It is an intensely moving and emotional experience.”
The event will be held at the Vanderbilt Student Life Center. A silent auction begins at 5 p.m., followed by the concert at 6:30 p.m., and a reception.
The concert is free but donations are accepted and all proceeds will go to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Caring Hearts Fund which was established in 2005 to assist patients with financial hardships that arise during their treatment.
