Songs from the Heart to showcase original tunes June 15

Songs from the Heart to showcase original tunes June 15

The annual Songs from the Heart concert, which showcases original song lyrics written by cancer patients, survivors and families, will be held Friday, June 15.

The reception and a silent auction will start at 5 p.m. and the free concert begins at 6:30 p.m.

This year’s event will be held in a new location at Vanderbilt Blair School of Music, Turner Hall, 2400 Blakemore Ave.

Songs from the Heart is sponsored by Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Gilda’s Club Nashville.

Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer is invited to attend the free two-night songwriting workshop led by professional singer and songwriter Tricia Walker. During the workshop, held June 12 and 13 at the VICC Cancer Clinic conference room, Walker will guide participants through the intricacies of songwriting, helping them turn thoughts and emotions into meaningful lyrics.

Walker and fellow musician Bill Sinclair will set the lyrics to original music and play the finished tunes during the concert. The resulting songs are sometimes funny and always emotional and insightful.

“The Songs from the Heart event has become one of the highlights of the year for our patients and family members,” said Cindy Tinker, LMSW, VICC social worker and organizer of the annual songfest. “We never know what kind of songs the participants will create and we are always surprised and moved by the depth of emotion in the new songs.”

All proceeds from the event will go to VICC’s Caring Hearts Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients who have financial hardships during their treatment.

Free parking for the event is available in the West Garage across from Children’s Way near the entrance to Blair School of Music.

Seating is limited, so participants are encouraged to register online at www.vicc.org/2012/songs. For more information about the project, visit www.vicc.org/songs-heart.
