Based in Washington, D.C., the AIA has been the leading professional membership association for architects since 1857.

It is governed by the board of directors, a nationally elected group that provides strategic leadership.

“As a board member I look forward to learning, sharing and acting on important initiatives which will make our region and country an even better place to live,” Stewart said.

Since coming to Vanderbilt in 1983, Stewart has led the medical campus through tremendous growth — from 1.2 million square feet in one location to more than 9 million square feet on multiple sites.

His major projects include The Vanderbilt Clinic, Eskind Biomedical Library and Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks.

Stewart is one of two board members representing the Gulf States Region, comprised of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee, and will serve a three-year term beginning this month.
