Vanderbilt physicians again listed on best doctors surveys
Again this year, Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s physicians are featured prominently in two popular annual surveys which recognize top physician performance and high levels of patient satisfaction. Both America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America list hundreds of Vanderbilt physicians as being among the nation’s best.
“One thing we know is we have great doctors and nurses and that is one of the distinguishing features for Vanderbilt Health,” said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., deputy vice chancellor for Health Affairs and CEO of the Vanderbilt Health System.”
“And these two organizations continue to confirm and recognize many of our high quality health care providers. This acknowledgment serves as further validation of the talent and dedication of our physicians.”

The annual list for America’s Top Doctors 2011, published by Castle Connolly Medical, selected 61 VUMC faculty representing a diverse array of specialty and subspecialty areas.
Inclusion criteria for America’s Top Doctors is described by Castle Connolly as a selection process that begins with online surveys of physicians in both academic and private practice positions across the U.S., who are asked to nominate physicians they consider best in their respective areas of medicine.
Once professional peer nominations are processed, a physician-led research team reviews the credentials of every physician considered for inclusion as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. This review includes, among other factors, scrutiny of medical education, training, hospital appointments, administrative posts, professional achievements, and malpractice and disciplinary history.
According to Castle Connolly, doctors do not and cannot pay to be included in any Castle Connolly listing or guide.
Also this year, 309 Vanderbilt physicians, including faculty specifically identied with VUMC, the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, the Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, VA Medical Center and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, were named to the list for Best Doctors in America.
Boston-based Best Doctors, Inc. describes their inclusion process for Best Doctors in America as drawing on the expertise of 46,000 physicians in 43 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties of medicine—representing the top 5 percent of physicians in their specialty.
The list is compiled every two years by Best Doctors, Inc. Each nominated physician was screened and asked to provide information about his or her practice.
