VUMC nursing holding first Staff Summit on March 20

Nursing staff councils will come together to host the first Vanderbilt Medical Center Nursing Staff Summit on Thursday, March 20, in the Student Life Center from 7-10 a.m.

Attendees can take in various presentations and browse among 20 booths centered around enhancing patient care, professional development and enhancing work life.

“We launched the nursing staff councils during the fall as a way to augment two-way communication between direct care nurses and administration,” said Marilyn Dubree, M.S.N., R.N., executive chief nursing officer. “This structure has been very effective in giving all nurses a voice, tapping into the nurses' ability to identify areas for improvement and be part of solutions.

“A great example is putting together an event like the upcoming Summit. We hope our nurses will attend this event that has been designed collaboratively between Shared Governance and Learning Center staff working closely with the eight staff council co-chairs and the direct care nurses whom they represent.”

Patient/family services, interpreter resources, diabetes education, educational opportunities at the School of Nursing, healing touch therapy, nurse wellness, victim services, VUPD and the Center for Patient and Professional Advocacy are just some of the areas that nurses can learn about during the Summit.

Nursing staff council leaders are: Nicole Hutcherson, R.N., and Pat Dusel, R.N., (Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital); Laurie Matravers, R.N., and Janet Parks, R.N., (Vanderbilt Medical Group); Miranda Reynolds, R.N., and Cynthia Cyrus, R.N., (Children's Hospital); and Pam Askins, R.N., and Elaine Atteberry, R.N., (Vanderbilt University Hospital).
