Onsite health clinics that provide primary care to teachers and their families can lower a school district’s health care costs, according to a new study that found these outcomes at Vanderbilt’s nurse-managed clinics at Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS).

A collaborative program across units at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is changing the way nurses and doctors care for newborns diagnosed with drug withdrawal symptoms at birth, also known as neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

Nurse researchers have a powerful new outlet to share their work with the Vanderbilt community. It’s called The Empowered Nurse, a twice-yearly, peer-reviewed journal for and about nursing research. The Office of Nursing Research released the first issue in May in celebration of Nurses Week.

VUMC nurses have developed and are administering a bachelor’s degree in emergency nursing program for nurses in the South American country of Guyana, the first of its kind in the region.

There are more than 1,000 advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), and their scope of practice expands every day.
