Apr. 13, 2022—Matthew Clark, MD, clinical fellow in Pediatric Rheumatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, won the Elliott V. Newman Prize for best abstract during the 40th annual Research Forum hosted April 5 by the VUMC Office of Graduate Medical Education and House Staff Advisory Council. VUMC House Staff presented Dario Englot, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Neurological Surgery and Surgical Director of Epilepsy, with the Grant W. Liddle Award for his “commitment and leadership in promoting an interest in research among young physicians.”
Team explores epilepsy-related brain disturbances
Sep. 5, 2019—A team led by a neurosurgeon-scientist and an engineering professor who specializes in techniques for analyzing functional neuroimaging data has received a $3 million grant to study disturbances in brain networks related to attention lapses and cognitive deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.
Brain network activity can improve in epilepsy patients after surgery
May. 16, 2019—Successful epilepsy surgery can improve brain connectivity like patterns seen in people without epilepsy, according to a new study.
Study aims to predict treatment response in epilepsy patients
Mar. 14, 2019—With the aid of $2.5 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Vanderbilt researchers are on a quest to develop early biomarkers of treatment outcomes for patients with temporal lobe epilepsy based on their individual brain networks.
New epilepsy monitoring systems collect better data
Nov. 15, 2018—New epilepsy monitoring systems at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are providing neurologists better data for assessing adult and pediatric patients.
Research reveals underappreciated role of brainstem in epilepsy
May. 31, 2018—New research from Vanderbilt suggests that repeated seizures reduce brainstem connectivity, a possible contributor to unexplained neurocognitive problems in epilepsy patients.
Neurostimulation an option for some epilepsy patients
Sep. 28, 2017—Patients with epilepsy who suffer seizures that can’t be effectively treated with medications or established surgical interventions could benefit from responsive neurostimulation, a relatively new treatment.
NIH grant boosts Englot’s epilepsy research efforts
Aug. 4, 2016—Dario Englot, M.D., Ph.D., has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to support his research into better understanding brain connectivity disturbances in patients with focal epilepsy.
