National lists laud VUMC physicians

Jan. 23, 2014, 8:15 AM

Two separate listings of the nation’s most well regarded physicians again highlight the skills of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s faculty and the strength of its clinical enterprise.

The two lists — “America’s Top Doctors” and the “Best Doctors in America” — combine to honor hundreds of Vanderbilt physicians who practice at Vanderbilt University Hospital, The Vanderbilt Clinic, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Vanderbilt Health at One Hundred Oaks and numerous other offsite facilities.

This year, 381 VUMC physicians are included on the Best Doctors in America list while 60 are named to America’s Top Doctors. Vanderbilt has more physicians named to the Best Doctors list than any other Tennessee health system, and more than twice as many as any other health care provider located in Middle Tennessee. Comparative data is not made available for Top Doctors.

The sheer volume of physicians included on the two lists is testament to the talent, skill and dedication of Vanderbilt’s faculty, said C. Wright Pinson, MBA, M.D., deputy vice chancellor for Health Affairs, senior associate dean for Clinical Affairs and CEO of the Vanderbilt Health System.

“We are fortunate to have an enormous number of faculty who are consistently recognized by their peers and our patients as being the very best,” said Pinson. “I want to congratulate not only those named to these lists but also the rest of our faculty and staff who make significant contributions every day to our success. The delivery of high quality health care services is truly about teamwork.”

America’s Top Doctors is a peer-recommended list published annually by Castle Connolly Medical. The methodology involves asking physicians in both academic and private practice from across the country to participate in the nomination process by identifying colleagues across numerous specialties who demonstrate excellence. Then a physician-led research team carefully reviews the credentials of every physician considered for inclusion.

The review includes, among other factors, scrutiny of medical education, training, hospital appointments, administrative posts, professional achievements, malpractice and disciplinary history. According to Castle Connolly, doctors do not and cannot pay to be included in any Castle Connolly listing or guide.

The Best Doctors in America list is a product of peer review in which doctors who excel in their specialties are selected by physician peers.

The Best Doctors in America list is assembled by Boston-based Best Doctors Inc., and results from exhaustive polling of more than 45,000 physicians in the United States.

Physicians representing more than 40 specialties and 400 subspecialties of medicine appear on this year’s list.

In a confidential review, current physicians on the list answer the question, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer?”

Best Doctors Inc. evaluates the results and verifies all additional information to meet detailed inclusion criteria. Physicians cannot pay to be included in the Best Doctors database, nor are they paid to provide their input.
