Vanderbilt University’s Warren Sandberg, M.D., Ph.D., and Alissa Weaver, M.D., Ph.D., have been appointed to three-year terms on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Council of Faculty and Academic Societies.
The council is charged with identifying and communicating critical issues faced by medical school faculty members as they relate to the creation and implementation of AAMC programs, services and policies. It also serves as a communications conduit on matters involving the core missions of academic medicine.
Sandberg, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, and Weaver, associate professor of Cancer Biology, will work together to increase Vanderbilt’s voice and visibility within the council, which will meet in Nashville in March, and to influence national decisions related to academic medicine.
“We were asked to select one senior representative, such as a department chair or division director, and one junior representative, meaning a faculty member within 10 years of initial appointment,” said John Penn, Ph.D., assistant dean for Faculty Development, who tapped the pair to serve on the council.
“I’m thrilled that these two strong leaders have accepted the responsibility of serving on the CFAS,” Penn said. “They have the rare opportunity to become key players in shaping the future of academic medicine in the United States.”
The AAMC is the nation’s largest group representing medical schools and teaching hospitals.
Issues expected to come before the council in coming months include the evolving promotion and tenure system, the outcome and effectiveness of incentivized faculty compensation plans, faculty compliance burdens and the effect of federal and state budget actions on faculty missions.
