Ron Eavey, M.D., Guy M. Maness Professor and chair of Otolaryngology and director of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, received the 2017 Edward C. Bradley S.J., M.D., Medical Alumni Award from the Saint Joseph’s University Medical Alumni Chapter at its annual awards event on its Philadelphia campus on April 23.
“Receiving an unexpected award — and having your family and friends attend a ceremony — is a rare and authentic privilege,” Eavey said. “One often remembers the days in college; yet it is a profound delight and honor to find the college remembering you.”
Eavey, who is also executive medical director of the VUMC Health Plan and executive director of VUMC Population Health, was recognized for his loyalty and dedication to St. Joseph’s University’s mission through service to others, scholarship and research. After graduating from St. Joseph’s, Eavey received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and served his residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles from 1975-1977 before continuing his training in surgery and completing residency and clinical fellowships in otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School.
He earned board certifications in pediatrics and otolaryngology and served as the founding director of pediatric otolaryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard beginning in 1981. Eavey continued to hold the position, as well as being professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard, until he came to Vanderbilt in 2009.
Additionally, he graduated from Harvard School of Public Health with a degree in medical administration. He has written more than 200 publications with the main focus on the pediatric ear, and has served as the American representative to the World Health Organization in Geneva for ear issues.
