Update on closure of Children’s Way; phase 2 closure dates March 13-April 28

Vanderbilt University has updated plans for the closure of Children’s Way.

Children’s Way will be closed from Monday, March 13,  to Friday, April 28. Two–way traffic on Children’s Way will be closed from 24th Avenue South to 25th Avenue South, and will include the portion of the road in front of Blair School of Music and West Garage.

Pedestrian movement will still be accessible on the north side of Children’s Way. Bicycles will be rerouted to the north side of West Garage. Flaggers and proper signs will be in place to help easily navigate around the work zone for everyone’s safety.

West Garage will remain open for the duration of the work, however the entrance from Children’s Way will be closed. The entrances from 25th Avenue South and 24th Avenue South will not be impacted.

This road closure is one of a series that will occur through the coming months as part of the University’s ongoing Central Utilities Initiative. This is the second of three phases that will occur in this area. More will be released about the last phase closer to the date of construction. For more information about the CUI project please visit https://www.vanderbilt.edu/futurevu/central-utilities-initiative-cui/ or to keep updated about CUI project timeline please visit https://vanderbilt-cui.brasfieldgorrie.com/. This far-reaching project will provide enhancements to support various Vandy United projects, the Highland Quad Residential Colleges that will be built along 25th Avenue South, and other future projects.

Among the planned upgrades, the initiative will enhance the resiliency and redundancy of utility systems on campus. Capacity for utility generation will be increased with the construction of a new power plant beginning in 2023, as well as with improved and buried distribution lines. The Highland Chilled Water Plant and substation, which is being designed to achieve LEED certification, will be at the recreation field on 25th Avenue South next to the David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center.

Logistics and updated information about the construction projects will be available on the Central Utilities Initiative website. For questions or concerns please contact the Vanderbilt University Facilities Department at facilities@vanderbilt.edu.
