Eric Horvitz, MD, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer of Microsoft, will deliver the next Discovery Lecture at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on artificial intelligence (AI) in health care at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in 208 Light Hall. The lecture also will be livestreamed here.
Horvitz is a pioneer in the applications of machine learning, AI and decision science. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Co-sponsored by the VUMC Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) and Office of Research, his lecture will conclude a two-day ADVANCE Symposium entitled “The Future of Healthcare: Bridging AI Research and Human-Centered Solutions.”
Clinicians, staff, stakeholders and the community are welcome to attend the department’s ADVANCE (AI Discovery and Vigilance to Accelerate Innovation and Clinical Excellence) symposium Nov. 5-6, also in Room 208 Light Hall.
“As one of the world’s thought leaders and pioneers in the development and application of AI in health care, Dr. Horvitz is a perfect person to deliver the Discovery Lecture and closing keynote for our inaugural ADVANCE Symposium,” said ADVANCE Center co-director Peter Embi, MD, MS.
“We are honored to have him join us for this event and look forward to what I know will be an insightful and thought-provoking lecture at this pivotal time for our field,” said Embi, professor and chair of Biomedical Informatics and Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation at VUMC.
The Discovery Lecture, entitled “From AI Aspirations to Healthcare Futures,” will update the latest AI developments. Horvitz also will share his reflections on potential syntheses that build on decades of research on AI in medicine.
