Sara Horst named Department of Medicine interim vice chair for Clinical Affairs

Horst succeeds Bryan Harris, MD, MPH, MMHC, current executive vice chair for Clinical Affairs, who has been named interim chair of Medicine.

Sara Horst, MD, MPH, has been named interim vice chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, effective July 1.

Horst, professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, succeeds Bryan Harris, MD, MPH, MMHC, current executive vice chair for Clinical Affairs, who has been named interim chair of Medicine.

A graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Horst joined the faculty of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2011, upon completing a fellowship in Gastroenterology at VUMC and earning a Master of Public Health degree from Vanderbilt.

Horst specializes in the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She is a fellow of American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterology Association, and associate editor of the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

An advocate of the use of telehealth and other technologies to enhance and streamline patient care, Horst serves as associate vice chair for Digital Health Operations in the Department of Medicine, medical director of Telehealth Ambulatory Services for VUMC, and as a HealthIT Clinical Director.

Her honors include six Five Star excellence awards for Overall Quality of Doctor Care, a VUMC Credo Award for her contributions to developing telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, in 2022, a Physician Builder Award for devising and implementing new content and tools for VUMC’s Epic-based Health IT system, eStar.
