As Vanderbilt Health grows, it’s important for all of us — longtime employees and new hires alike — to have a standard way to refer to our locations and facilities.

This terminology guide is the current official listing of the facility names, locations, services and acronyms that, for clarity, we all need to use when communicating with each other.

One major change is the use of Vanderbilt Health, rather than Vanderbilt University Medical Center or VUMC, as the health system brand name. This has already been the practice in many communications. It now becomes the standard, for both internal and external uses, to reflect our distinction as the region’s leading academic health system.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center and VUMC will remain the institution’s legal entity, and our email addresses will remain vumc.org. Otherwise, Vanderbilt Health will be used to reflect all three areas of the enterprise — clinical, research, and teaching and training.

New facilities, including the Jim Ayers Tower and Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital, are also a part of the new guide, with clear instructions on how to use their names. The guide also contains an extensive list of affiliated entity acronyms and shared clinical services terminology for internal purposes.

It’s critically important for any organization’s long-term success for everyone to be able to speak the same language, whether we are speaking with each other or communicating with the public. This document provides a guide for accurately doing so for internal uses.

The full adoption of Vanderbilt Health as the name and brand of our health system will occur over the coming months, with the change reflected on websites, stationery and other materials.
