Colleagues,

In March, when Dr. Balser announced his decision to retire at the end of this calendar year, he indicated the Board of Directors would communicate with the organization as the process to identify his successor unfolds.

As Chair of the Board, I’d like to share with you an update on the work underway to fill this critical role.

The Board has selected Russell Reynolds Associates, a distinguished executive search firm with expertise in academic medicine, to partner with us on a national search for the next President and CEO of Vanderbilt Health and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Sara Finley, a Board member and chair of the Management Development and Compensation Committee, is chairing the search committee, composed of the directors on the Board Executive Committee.

With feedback from the entire Board and other key stakeholders, we have prioritized the key experiences, credentials and competencies required to guide Vanderbilt Health into this next chapter.  Building upon the immense success experienced during Jeff’s tenure, the Board’s focus has been on identifying a leader who will champion our culture of collaboration, service and excellence amidst a period of continued growth, while also possessing strong capabilities to navigate the forces shaping healthcare at the local, state and national levels.

In the coming weeks, the search committee of the Board will begin to interview a slate of exceptional candidates with the goal of identifying the next CEO and Dean sometime this fall. As the search progresses, we will continue to keep you updated.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your continued efforts, as we identify the next leader to advance our leadership in healthcare delivery, scientific discovery, and training and education.

Sincerely,

Edie Carell Johnson, JD
