 From the nomination

“It is my absolute honor to nominate Riley for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, professionalism, clinical excellence, and human kindness she demonstrates every single day as a recovery nurse at Vanderbilt. From the moment Riley entered the room, she brought a calm, reassuring presence during what was an incredibly vulnerable and stressful time. Recovery care is often where patients feel disoriented, anxious, fearful, and physically uncomfortable, yet Riley has an exceptional gift for making patients feel safe, seen, heard, and genuinely cared for. Her ability to combine highly skilled nursing care with authentic compassion is truly remarkable. Riley consistently demonstrated extraordinary attentiveness, anticipating needs before they even had to be voiced. She communicated clearly and patiently, explaining every step of the recovery process in a way that reduced fear and restored confidence.

“Even in what was clearly a very busy and demanding environment, she never made anyone feel rushed or insignificant. She treated every interaction with dignity, empathy, and grace. What stood out most was not only her clinical expertise, but the sincerity of her heart. Riley cares for people – not just patients. She brought comfort during moments of uncertainty, encouragement during discomfort, and compassion during vulnerability. Her kindness extended beyond routine nursing duties and created a lasting emotional impact that will not be forgotten.

“Nurses like Riley represent the very best of the nursing profession. She embodies the mission and spirit of the DAISY Award through her exceptional clinical care, emotional intelligence, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to healing both physically and emotionally. Vanderbilt is extraordinarily fortunate to have a nurse of Riley’s caliber caring for patients and families.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
