Jeffrey Upperman, MD
Jeffrey Upperman, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief and Chair of Pediatric Surgery at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, has been elected President-Elect of the Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS).
Upperman’s election was announced at the PTS annual meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 5. He will serve a three-year term, beginning Nov. 5, as president-elect, president and immediate past term president. Previously, as part of his ongoing involvement with PTS, he served as the organization secretary.
The Pediatric Trauma Society is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to improving care for injured children through clinical care, research, education, prevention, and advocacy.
“Injury remains a leading threat to children’s lives, and no single discipline or hospital solves it alone,” said Upperman. “PTS brings surgeons, nurses, emergency physicians, researchers, and prevention advocates together to share accountability for outcomes. I look forward to working with the board to strengthen that work, from the bedside to the systems that support it.”
Upperman, who joined Vanderbilt Health in 2019, leads the Office of the Surgeon-in-Chief, which oversees perioperative governance at Monroe Carell, a Level I pediatric trauma center. As surgeon-in-chief, he has worked to help shape the hospital’s educational programs and mentor the next generation of surgeons and clinical leaders with the goal to advance pediatric surgical care.
Among his other professional activities, he serves on the American Board of Surgery Pediatric Surgery Board, is a past president of the Surgical Infection Society, and is a trustee of the Surgical Infection Society Foundation.
