The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) is awarding William Schaffner, M.D., professor and chair of Preventive Medicine, with its John P. Utz Leadership Award, presented to individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding level of dedication to their profession and to the NFID.
The John P. Utz Award, established in 2007, is named in honor of Dr. Utz, a noted infectious diseases academician, who was one of the NFID founders and a champion in the fight against infectious diseases.
Schaffner received the award recently at the NFID awards banquet in Washington, D.C.
“Dr. Schaffner has often been the face of NFID while serving as spokesperson and moderator of many of NFID’s initiatives,” NFID President Thomas File said. “We are fortunate that he continues to serve enthusiastically in this capacity.”
Schaffner joined the NFID Board of Directors in 2001 and served as the organization’s president from 2010-2012.
The NFID is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating both the public and health care professionals about the causes, treatments and prevention of infectious diseases.
The 2011 recipient of the Utz award was Vanderbilt’s George C. Hill, Ph.D., professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology Emeritus.
