Two faculty members of the Vanderbilt Voice Center have won awards from the American Laryngological Association (ALA).
• Robert Ossoff, M.D., executive medical director of the Voice Center and the Guy M. Maness Professor of Laryngology and Voice, received the American Laryngological Award. The annual award was established in 1987 to recognize “outstanding achievement, either in medicine or another discipline, which has contributed significantly to Laryngology,” according to the ALA.
“This is very meaningful to me as it was presented to me by the Association’s president, Dr. Mark Courey, who was my first fellow in Laryngology and shared my vision for the future of Laryngology as a subspecialty in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery,” Ossoff said. “It is the highest award given by the association and represents recognition for the many contributions and outstanding achievements to the field of Laryngology by the members of the Division of Laryngology, Department of Otolaryngology and the faculty and staff of The Vanderbilt Voice Center.”
• Gaelyn Garrett, M.D., senior executive medical director of the Voice Center and professor of Otolaryngology, received the deRoaldes Award. The annual award was created in 1907 to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the field of Laryngology.
“I am extremely honored but humbled to be recognized by my fellow members of the ALA, especially when I look at former winners of the deRoaldes Award, including Dr. Chevalier Jackson in the early 1900s, who is considered by many to be the father of Laryngology,” Garrett said.
Ron Eavey, M.D., Guy M. Maness Professor and chair of Otolaryngology and director of the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, added, “Dr. Ossoff’s vision for a service focused on Laryngology and the professional voice — and Dr. Garrett’s amplification of that care — are the reason for these recognitions which they richly deserve. The Voice Center at Vanderbilt is unique and a world-status destination service.”
