Safety of the food supply; national nursing shortage; the demand for weight-loss drugs in Tennessee; plus other news stories with VUMC sources

William Schaffner, MD, professor of Preventive Medicine, was quoted by reporters at, among other national and local outlets, ABC News (mpox); The National Desk (safety of the food supply); Prevention (severe flu risk); NewsNation (new COVID variant); Well + Good  (risk of bird flu); and Live Science (Headline: “Can you get a brain-eating amoeba from tap water?” Short answer: No.)

Nashville Business Journal , Healthcare Finance News,  HC Innovation Group and Venture Nashville Connectionspublished stories about Vanderbilt Health joining Aegis Ventures 11-system strategic digital consortium to build, invest in and deploy new technologies that improve medical care and outcomes. Olivia Bryant, senior vice president at Vanderbilt Health Professional Solutions, was interviewed by the NBJ.

NewsChannel 9 WTVC in Chattanooga reporter Mary-Beth Mangrum interviewed Gitanjali Srivastava, MD, medical director of Obesity Medicine, for a story about the increasing use and current demand of GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, in Tennessee.

Robin Steaban, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer of Vanderbilt University Hospital, was interviewed by WZTV Fox17 reporter Madeleine Nolan about the national nursing shortage and how it’s affecting Tennessee and VUMC specifically.

The National Cancer Institute’s “Cancer Currents” blog science writer Sharon Reynolds interviewed Dakim Gaines, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Radiation Oncology, for a story about results from the PACE-B trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The Phase 3 trial looked at stereotactic body radiotherapy in localized prostate cancer.

Television stations WBBJ-TV (Jackson, TN), WBIR- TV ( Knoxville, TN), WTNZ Fox 43 News (Knoxville, TN), and WDEF-TV CBS 12 (Chattanooga, TN) interviewed Rebecca Stern, MD, assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Adult Ambulatory Medical Director of Infection Prevention, for stories about how to stay safe while traveling during the holidays. The interviews were conducted as part of the Health and Human Services Pan-Respiratory Public Education Campaign.
