The Vanderbilt LifeFlight Event Medicine team recently won the Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society Corporate Award.
The award honors groups that have distinguished themselves by providing outstanding support for the athletic training profession in the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society is the official state organization representing the athletic training profession in the state of Tennessee.
This award reflects more than a decade of collaboration between LifeFlight and numerous athletic organizations, both collegiate and professional. Since 2008, LifeFlight has provided emergency medical support for the Nashville Predators, Nashville Soccer Club, Vanderbilt University, Nashville Sounds, Austin Peay State University and Belmont University. The team works closely with Vanderbilt Athletics, delivering on-the-ground medical response and expertise for high-profile games and events.
In addition to sideline medical coverage, LifeFlight Event Medicine plays an integral role in developing Emergency Action Plans with athletic trainers across the state, ensuring rapid and effective response during sports-related emergencies. The team also actively contributes to the education of sports medicine professionals, including teaching annually at the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society conference, one of the industry’s leading events.
“Vanderbilt LifeFlight has provided countless hours of service to many athletic training staff throughout the state,” said Tom “Boz” Bossung, director of Athletic Training Services and assistant director, Sports Medicine, Vanderbilt Athletics. “They provide a level of care that we have come to depend on, knowing they are the best at what they do.”
“We are extremely proud of our Event Medicine team’s legacy of providing consistent, quality patient care to attendees of Nashville’s premier sports organizations,” said Sherri Dean, executive director of Clinical Operations for Vanderbilt LifeFlight. “Nobody ever wants to get sick when attending an event, but our Event Medicine team works hard to ensure attendees are safe and cared for, so they can get back to enjoying the game.”
“This award is a testament to the trust and collaboration we’ve built with athletic trainers throughout Tennessee,” said Jenny Detwiler, director of Vanderbilt LifeFlight Event Medicine. “We’re honored to support these professionals who are on the front lines of athlete care, and we remain committed to providing the highest standard of emergency medical support.”
LifeFlight provides care not only for athletes, but for spectators as well. Recently at a Nashville Soccer Club match, an attendee wasn’t feeling well, and extreme dizziness overtook her. Within minutes, the attendee was surrounded by the on-site Vanderbilt LifeFlight Event Medicine team. She was quickly transported to Vanderbilt University Hospital’s emergency room and was diagnosed with a heart attack. She credits the team with not only saving her life but preserving her quality of life as well.
