A simulation drill will occur at Vanderbilt University Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 28, between 8 a.m. and noon. The drill will involve a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department helicopter landing on the VUH helipad to practice the scenario of receiving an injured MNPD officer.
The drill is being held to familiarize MNPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team medics with helipad procedures, the route to the emergency department, and transfer of care to the ED staff in the event an officer is evacuated from a scene to VUH via the MNPD Aviation Unit.
During the drill, an officer with simulated injuries will be transported from the MNPD helicopter, which will land on the VUH helipad, to the ED. Those involved in the drill include Vanderbilt LifeFlight Flight Communications, VUMC Helicopter Transport Team, MNPD Aviation Unit, SWAT, Trauma Outreach and Adult ED trauma staff.
Areas of the hospital involved in the drill will be the helipad, helipad elevators, the hallway from the helipad elevators to the ED (A-POD), and the trauma desk area in the ED. The exercise will not impede normal helipad operations, the transport of patients to VUH, or deter any hospital staff from normal operations and patient care.
Hospital staff and visitors are asked not to take any photos or videos of the exercise to maintain the security of SWAT officers. VUH personnel involved in the drill may take videos or photos for training purposes only.
Signs notifying hospital staff and visitors about the drill will be in place during the exercise. For any questions, contact Christopher Brown, MS, CCP, TP-C, Christopher.brown.3@vumc.org.
