Elise Perry, BSN, RN, works in the Pediatric Holding Room/Post Anesthesia Care unit at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. She is one of the latest Vanderbilt Health DAISY Award winners.

From the nomination

“Elise goes above and beyond for every single patient, every single time. She could be nominated for a DAISY every day. Today, she went above and beyond for a behavior health patient who needed extra TLC for surgery. She treated him with ultimate kindness and respect and followed the team into the OR. She was the best advocate for him. When the team began to rush through induction and the patient began to get aggressive, she offered a solution of having the person he had the most rapport with, model the mask that he needed and support him through the task. It worked for him and allowed the staff and the patient to stay safe. It also allowed for less medical trauma for the patient and an overall better outcome. She provided this patient with compassionate, patient-centered care that was not only beneficial to him, but the entire team taking care of him in the perioperative space. We are the luckiest to have Elise on our team and we could all learn from her in many ways.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
