A new year means a new white coat for first-year Vanderbilt University School of Medicine students.

Neil Osheroff, PhD, John G. Coniglio professor of Biochemistry, professor of Medicine and director of the Academy for Excellence in Education, received the Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship from the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE).

The ABIM Foundation has awarded the 2019 John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize to five scholarly articles — one commentary and four research pieces — that explore physician burnout, unprofessional behavior and integrity in research.

Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, kicked off the Spring Faculty Meeting by providing a short update of VUSM’s academic endeavors.

W. Bedford Waters, MD, current president of the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association and the second African American to graduate from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM), died May 25. He was 71.

At commencement ceremonies for Vanderbilt University School of Medicine graduates last week, Dean Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, relinquished his usual role as commencement speaker and bestowed it to outgoing Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education, Bonnie Miller, MD, MMHC.
