Representatives from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt joined Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce and other local officials on Sept. 26 to cut the ribbon on a specialty and after-hours clinic in Murfreesboro.

Juarez to receive The Arc’s Educator of the Year award

Pablo Juárez, M.Ed., director of the Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (TRIAD) in the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, has been named Educator of the Year by The Arc, the nation’s largest community-based organization advocating for and serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

New VUMC educational series focuses on palliative care

A new series of lunch and learn events at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is designed to teach nurses and other medical professionals best practices for providing palliative care to patients at their bedsides.

Geriatrician and health services researcher Joanne Lynn, M.D., spoke on building health systems for the elderly during her recent Flexner Discovery Lecture. Lynn is the director of the Center for Elder Care and Advanced Illness at the nonprofit Altarum Institute.

Lack of oral care can lead to life-threatening situations

Following trips to two different hospital emergency rooms, 24-year-old Geoffrey Slayden was raced by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) for surgery and a week of hospitalization, including several days in intensive care on a ventilator and feeding tube. The culprit: abscessed teeth.

American College of Critical Care Medicine honors Bernard

Gordon Bernard, M.D., Executive Vice President for Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), will receive the American College of Critical Care Medicine’s highest honor, the Distinguished Investigator Award, during the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) 46th Critical Care Congress in Honolulu in January, 2017.
