Partnership enhances eye care for Ebola survivors in Liberia
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM), the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) and the Vanderbilt Eye Institute (VEI) have joined forces with partners in Liberia to strengthen medical education and increase access to ophthalmology care in the aftermath of the 2014-2015 West African Ebola epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people. -

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine to offer new master’s degree in genetic counseling
Genetic counseling is one of the fastest growing health professions in the country. Demand for genetic counselors is far outpacing the number of trained specialists, prompting the creation of a new degree program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. The Board of Trust recently approved a master of genetic counseling degree, and the first students are expected to enroll for the fall 2019 semester. -

Educational journey begins for new medical students
As family members, friends and faculty gathered in 208 Light Hall, many with cell phones positioned to capture the moment, Bonnie Miller, M.D., MMHC, welcomed them to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s (VUSM) annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony, and then turned to the first-year students and asked a simple question. -

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) has been chosen to be a part of the newly formed Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Institute for the Transformation of Medical Education (Kern Institute), a national initiative to transform medical education across the continuum from pre-medical school to physician practice. -

The Section of Surgical Sciences recently hosted an inaugural Vanderbilt Women in Surgery event that featured a panel discussion with three prominent female Nashville surgeons: Bonnie Miller, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education and Executive Vice President for Educational Affairs; Gretchen Jackson, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Pediatric Surgery; and Jeanne Ballinger, M.D., general surgeon with Saint Thomas Health.
