The COIN program supports research innovations and partnerships to ensure that research has the greatest possible impact on Veterans Health Administration policies, health care practices and health outcomes for veterans.

With a $3 million research grant, Henrique Serezani will investigate how altered metabolism in diabetes affects inflammation and sepsis.

The research shows that by getting enough sleep and reducing variability around sleep onset and wake times, patients can reduce the incidence of chronic disease.

Vanderbilt’s adult heart, lung, liver and kidney transplant programs individually had record fiscal years, with 150 heart transplants, 90 lung transplants, 180 liver transplants and 333 kidney transplants. In addition, adult transplant teams performed three heart/lung transplants and four kidney/pancreas transplants.

Sweeping data integration and clinical trial simulations are needed to help decide which targets to prioritize in researching new tuberculosis treatment regimens.

They are the only two from Tennessee named this year for the program, which provides support for each student’s dissertation research for up to three years.

The new Department of Medicine chair will succeed Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, MMHC, who stepped down from her role as the department’s leader in November 2023 to serve as director of the National Cancer Institute.
