Patients, faculty and staff gathered in Langford Auditorium on June 12 to celebrate Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) milestone 1,000th heart transplant.

The Section of Surgical Sciences recently hosted an inaugural Vanderbilt Women in Surgery event that featured a panel discussion with three prominent female Nashville surgeons: Bonnie Miller, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education and Executive Vice President for Educational Affairs; Gretchen Jackson, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Pediatric Surgery; and Jeanne Ballinger, M.D., general surgeon with Saint Thomas Health.

Galen Perdikis, M.D., professor and chair of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, has been named professor and chair of Vanderbilt’s Department of Plastic Surgery. His appointment is effective Aug. 1.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is among the top hospitals in the United States performing liver transplants, according to a recent report published in the American Journal of Transplantation.

The Section of Surgical Sciences Warm Coat Drive in support of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Homeless Health Services rounded up 75 warm coats as well as hats, gloves and socks.

R. Daniel Beauchamp, M.D., chair of the Section of Surgical Sciences and the John Clinton Foshee Distinguished Professor of Surgery, has been selected to receive the 2016 Dr. Rodman E. and Thomas G. Sheen Award from the New Jersey American College of Surgeons (ACS) Chapter.

A new proposal under consideration by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) that would change the way donated livers are distributed would negatively impact patients listed for liver transplantation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and across the Southeast, according to Seth Karp, M.D., H. William Scott Jr. Professor and chair of the Department of Surgery.
