Byrne to take post at Brigham and Women’s

John G. Byrne, M.D., William S. Stoney Jr. Professor of Cardiac Surgery and chair of the department, is stepping down from his position to become the chief of Cardiac Surgery and the vice president of Surgical Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He becomes the Lawrence H. Cohn Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, effective April 1, 2013.

Study seeks to ease HIV transmission rates in Nigeria

Researchers at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) have received a major federal grant to study whether an integrated, family-focused approach can prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV — the AIDS virus — in Nigeria.

Study seeks new ways to help teens manage type 1 diabetes

Shelagh Mulvaney, Ph.D., assistant professor of Nursing, leads a national team of researchers, engineers and designers that recently landed a $1.8 million federal grant to identify new ways to teach critical problem-solving skills to teenagers with type 1 diabetes using an Internet and mobile phone-based system.

Disney TV star to headline event to raise funds for cancer research

Disney television personality Coco Jones will be the featured performer at this year’s Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin-Robbins Family Day in Nashville. The annual T.J. Martell Foundation event, which raises funds in support of cancer research at institutions like Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Curb Event Center, Belmont University.
