Jeffrey Rathmell, PhD, a pioneer in immune and cancer cell metabolism research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has been elected an honorary member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), one of the nation’s oldest and most respected medical honor societies.
This honor for Rathmell, the Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair in Immunobiology and founding director of the Vanderbilt Center for Immunobiology, occurs near the end of his 10-year career at VUMC and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Effective July 1, he will start a new chapter as chair of the Ben May Department for Cancer Research and director of the Ludwig Center at the University of Chicago.
Rathmell is among 49 current, full-time members of the Vanderbilt faculty who have been elected to membership in the ASCI.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of membership in this esteemed society than Dr. Rathmell,” said Chris Williams, MD, PhD, professor of Medicine and associate dean for Physician-Scientist Education and Training at Vanderbilt.
After earning his PhD in immunology from Stanford University, Rathmell did postdoctoral work in immunology and cancer biology at the University of Chicago and University of Pennsylvania.
Rathmell was a member of the faculty at Duke University before coming to Vanderbilt in 2015.
He currently is professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, and of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics.
