“Dr. Johnsen is an outstanding young urologist with a unique skill set. Having just completed the premier fellowship in male reconstructive surgery in the U.S., he brings tremendous expertise to the department,” said David Penson, MD, Paul V. Hamilton, MD and Virginia E. Howd Professor of Urologic Oncology and chair of the department. “He employs the newest and most advanced surgical techniques in the treatment of urethral stricture disease and lower urinary tract reconstruction. I have no doubt that referring physicians will find him to be an invaluable resource and someone they can count on to treat their patients with these difficult urologic conditions.”

Johnsen’s clinical interests include urethral stricture disease, rectourethral fistulae, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, male urinary incontinence, and all aspects of genitourinary trauma. He has extensive training and expertise in various flap and grafting techniques for complex genitourinary reconstruction that are utilized in only a small number of centers across the country.

He has a strong interest in the acute management of patients with genitourinary injuries and how to improve multi-disciplinary care for these patients. Similarly, his primary research interest revolves around improving quality of life and survivorship care for patients following major pelvic traumas.

“I am thrilled to be returning to Vanderbilt after picking up some new ideas and tricks during my years away,” said Johnsen. “Knowing that you are returning to a great hospital, with wonderful colleagues and collaborators, is a great feeling as a young faculty member. I am really looking forward to doing my part to help strengthen what is already one of the best urology departments in the country.”

Johnsen received his undergraduate degree in biology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and his MD at Tulane University School of Medicine, where he received the Joseph Hume Memorial Award in Urology. He completed a clinical fellowship in male genitourinary trauma and reconstruction at Harborview Medical Center at the University of Washington in Seattle, as well as a research fellowship at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center.

He is a member of the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, Sexual Medicine Society of North America, American College of Surgeons and International Society for Sexual Medicine.

Patients can be referred to Dr. Johnsen by calling the Vanderbilt Urology Clinic, 615-322-2880.
