Mary Romano, MD, MPH, associate professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, is the new president of the North American Society of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology (NASPAG).
Founded in 1986, NASPAG is an organization focused on advancing the reproductive health care of pediatric and adolescent females. The society is dedicated to providing multidisciplinary leadership in education, research, advocacy and clinical care to improve the reproductive health of youth. It also has helped establish the educational requirements for medical trainees who are pursuing a career in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
Its official journal, the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, had its first volume published in 1987 and is one of the only journals focused on pediatric and adolescent gynecology. It continues to cover the spectrum of clinical care, advocacy, education and research in the subspecialty area, addressing gynecologic issues from birth through young adulthood.
“I am honored to be president of such an amazing organization. NASPAG is a community of providers who are passionate about ensuring that young girls receive unrestricted, unbiased, evidence-based reproductive health care, and we are humbled by the privilege and the responsibility of caring for our youth,” said Romano, who joined the VUMC faculty in 2007.
“Beyond Dr. Romano, it is notable how many members of the Department of Pediatrics are in key leadership roles in the most important pediatric organizations nationally and worldwide,” said Todd Callahan, MD, MPH, professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Health.
