From the nomination

“Beth was caring for a 5-day old patient admitted whose mother was also staying in the room. When she was drawing the patient’s morning bili level, the mother made a comment about her pants feeling wet. Beth asked her if she was bleeding and if she was having clots, then helped her to the bathroom. She saw the clots and instructed and assisted the mother back in bed. Beth was providing fundal massage and removing clots as she is experienced as a L&D RN as well.

Beth then called a second RN for help. The second RN got the supplies she asked for and called a rapid response team. Beth was basically leading the response and continued to massage and remove clots until the ED arrived. The mother was transported to Vanderbilt University Hospital and rushed to emergency surgery to control her bleeding. Beth’s quick decisions and escalation of care likely saved this situation from resulting in a devastating outcome for the mother.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
