Bryan Harris, MD, MPH, MMHC, Associate Professor of Medicine and Executive Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Business Development in the Department of Medicine, has been named to serve as Executive Vice President for Shared Clinical Services, which includes the areas of Pharmacy, Laboratory Services, Radiology Services and the associated Clinical Service Centers. He will assume this role on July 1.
Harris, who is holder of the Allen B. Kaiser, MD, Directorship for Clinical Excellence, has extensive administrative experience with Vanderbilt Health, having recently served as Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine and as the Executive Medical Director of the Medicine Patient Care Center.
In this role leading Shared Clinical Services, Harris will report to Cecelia Theobald, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine, Chief of Staff for Corporate Clinical Affairs and Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs.
“Bryan’s physician leadership at Vanderbilt Health spans more than ten years, with a specialty in implementing creative solutions that benefit patients and clinical teams alike. I am thrilled that now we will get to benefit from his clinical expertise and compassionate leadership across our growing health system,” said Theobald.
The Shared Clinical Services Division was formed in 2022 to create organizational alignment for Vanderbilt Health’s Pharmacy, Laboratory Services and Sterile Processing Services. The Division was later reconfigured to also include Radiology Services and the associated Clinical Service Center as well as Decedent Affairs. While Sterile Processing remains within the division it is now under different administrative oversight.
The Division supports Vanderbilt Health’s various entities such as Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt Health Services, along with Vanderbilt Health’s regional hospitals and ambulatory clinics, while its missions are to ensure enterprise alignment, economies of scale and operational synergies, standards of best practice enhancing quality, patient safety and compliance while eliminating variability.
Harris’ extensive history with Vanderbilt Health also includes serving as associate health care epidemiologist where he helped guide the medical center’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also served as chief health system epidemiologist for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Tennessee Valley Healthcare System through 2021.
As executive medical director of Vanderbilt Health’s Medicine Patient Care Center from 2018 to 2023, Harris worked with departments and divisions to align services, and by improving access and enhancing efficiencies reduced barriers to care. In 2023, he was named Executive Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine.
“I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. The Shared Clinical Services division is foundational to how we deliver safe, reliable, high-quality care every day. I am excited to partner with the exceptional leaders and team members in Pharmacy, Laboratory Services, Radiology Services, and Decedent Affairs, along with colleagues across the enterprise, to continue improving the experience for our patients and our workforce,” said Harris.
A native of Middle Tennessee, Harris, a rare “Quadruple Dore,” attended Vanderbilt University, where he earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees, as well as his Master of Public Health and Master of Management in Health Care degrees.
He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt Health, where he served as chief resident, and where he also completed fellowship training in Infectious Diseases.
