William Obremskey, MD, MPH, MMHC, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been named president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), the leading orthopaedic trauma specialty association in North America.  

Over the past two-plus decades, Obremskey, who is also the Executive Medical Director of Supply Chain for Vanderbilt Health, has served OTA as Chair of the Membership Committee, Program Committee member, Chair of the Evidence-Based Medicine Committee and Co-Chair of the Trauma Registry Committee.  

“The OTA has played a transformative role throughout my career,” Obremskey said. “The association’s mission to improve the care of patients throughout the world with musculoskeletal injuries through education, research and collaboration aligns with principles about which I am most passionate.” 

Obremskey received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Duke University and an MPH at the University of North Carolina, and he trained in orthopaedics at the University of Washington. He then served in the United States Air Force and completed a trauma fellowship in Basel, Switzerland, prior to joining the University of North Carolina Orthopaedics department. He joined Vanderbilt Orthopaedics in 2002 and completed a Master of Management in Health Care at Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management in 2013.  

He has been principal investigator on four Department of Defense Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium-funded studies and has authored or co-authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications.  

“Dr. Obremskey has made a tremendous impact in his career in clinical care, research and education,” said Rick Wright, MD, MMHC, the Dan Spengler, MD Professor of Orthopaedics, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs. “The presidency of OTA is a capstone to a career dedicated to service and improving the lives of orthopaedic trauma patients.” 

Obremskey said he is honored to serve as president of the OTA and looks “forward to working for our members to improve the resources to provide care and avoid burnout/moral injury as well as to advance evidence-based care, foster innovation, support research and develop the next generation of orthopaedic trauma leaders.”
