Losses

Alice Louise H. Altstatt, MA’52, MD’56, died Jan. 10. She was 94. Dr. Alstatt is survived by her children Leslie, Alice, Carol, Julia, Hamilton and Robin, and four grandchildren.

Schales L. Atkinson, MD, HS’68, died May 4. He was 83. Dr. Atkinson is survived by his daughters Sarah and Mary Beth, and four grandchildren.

Eric M. Chazen, BA’52, MD, HS’58, died April 19. He was 89. Dr. Chazen is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Lisa; and four grandchildren.

James J. Conners, BA’45, MD’48, died March 6. He was 96. Dr. Conners is survived by his wife, Jacolynn; son, James; and three granddaughters.

Brian M. Davis, MD, HS’75, died March 10. He was 75. Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, Laura; his siblings and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

K. Lindley Dodson, MD, HS’06, died Jan. 26, 2020. She was 43. Dr. Dodson is survived by her husband, Drew; and children Shaw, Tucker, and Loretta.

Michael V. Doyle, BA’66, MD, HS’74,’75, FE’75, died July 1. He was 77. Dr. Doyle is survived by his sons Andrew and Davis.

Robert H. Franklin, MD’66, HS’72,’73, died June 17. He was 81. Dr. Franklin is survived by his wife, Sandra Siehl; children Susan, John and Nancy; and six grandchildren.

Fred Goldner, Jr., BA’45, MD’48, HS’56, died April 3. He was 95. Dr. Goldner is survived by his wife, Martha; children Cynthia, Francie and Fredjoseph; and five grandchildren.

Arlyn V. Horn, MPH’20, died Feb. 26. She was 38. She is survived by her parents, Vernon and Janice; and brother, Vernon.

Louis “Lou” G. Horn III, BA’59, MD’63, died June 2. He was 83. Dr. Horn is survived by his wife, Joanne; son Louis; and five grandchildren.

John D. Hutcherson, MD’60, HS’66, died May 1. He was 86. Dr. Hutcherson is survived by his sister, Lynda Jo; niece, Amy Bair Koerper; and two grandnieces.

William “Billy” S. Hutchings II, MD’82, died June 16. He was 65. Dr. Hutchings is survived by his wife, Melanie, and daughters Sasha and Kayla.

Patrick L. Jasper, MD’65, HS’66, died May 24. He was 82. Dr. Jasper is survived by his wife, Kathryn; children Jennifer and Rick; stepdaughters Lisa, Briana and Kara; and 14 grandchildren.

John C. Lawrence, MD’50, died Sept. 3. He was 99. Dr. Lawrence is survived by his daughters Deborah, Pamela, Barbara and Amy; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Alexander R. Lawton III, MD’64, HS’66, died Aug. 22. He was 82. Dr. Lawton graduated from Yale University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. At Vanderbilt University School of Medicine he was elected to AOA and was the Founder’s Medalist for his class, receiving top honors. He stayed at Vanderbilt for a pediatrics internship and residency. In 1980 Dr. Lawton returned to Vanderbilt as the Edward Claiborne Stahlman Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Immunology and Rheumatology. He did research in human immunodeficiency that had a significant impact on the lives of affected children. He was the author of more than 200 primary research articles and more than 70 invited reviews or book chapters. He was elected to membership in the American Pediatric Society, American Association of Immunologists and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. In addition, Dr. Lawton served on the editorial boards of Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology, the Journal of Clinical Investigation and the Journal of Clinical Immunology. He retired in 2009. Dr. Lawton was predeceased by his first wife, Frances Richie Crockett, and his sister, Bernardine (Bunny) Lawton. He is survived by his wife, Deborah R. Doyle, MD; son and daughter-in-law Alexander Robert Lawton IV and Kirsten; daughter Julia Lawton; and three grandchildren.

Richard W. Light, MD, Med Fac, died May 11. He was 79. Dr. Light is survived by his wife, Judith; children Mark and Sandy; stepchildren Adrene, Mark, Danita and Nicole; and 13 grandchildren.

Frank A. Loda, MD’60, HS’61, died April 14. He was 86. Dr. Loda is survived by his children, Margaret, David, and Matthew; and three grandchildren.

Manuel P. Macapinlac, MD, MS ‘61, PhD ‘67, died on March 6. He was 90. He is survived by his wife, Letty; sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, grandsons-in-law and great grandchildren.

Joseph M. Merrill, MD, FE, died June 27. He was 97. Dr. Merrill was preceded in death by his wife, Gudrun, and is survived by daughters Maria and Caroline, and two grandchildren.

Jack M. Miller, BA’53, MD’56, died Feb. 18. He was 90. Dr. Miller is survived by children Lori, Christi, John; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Merrill D. Moore, Jr., MD’59, died April 12. He was 87. Dr. Moore is survived by his children Doug and Melissa; five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

P. Takis Patikas, MD’65, HS’70, died Aug. 24. He was 86. Dr. Patikas is survived by his wife, Louise; children Takis and Demetri; and four grandchildren.

W. Faxon Payne, BA’45, MD’48, HS’53,’60, Emer Fac Med, died Feb. 16. He was 95. Dr. Payne is survived by his daughters Virginia and Ellen; and two grandchildren.

Robert L. Post, MD, Emer Fac-Med, died Jan. 26. He was 100.

Michael C. Reed, MD, HS’89, died April 28. He was 62. Dr. Reed is survived by his wife, Elaine; and children Hannah, Emily and Matthew.

Lansdon “Lanny” B. Robbins, II, BA’56, MD’62, HS’68, FE’65,’66, died April 5. He was 86. Dr. Robbins is survived by his wife, Anne; children Elizabeth, Lansdon and John; and eight grandchildren.

Deborah “Debbie” Stewart Ruark, BA’71, MD’75, HS’76,’79, died Feb. 4. She was 70. Dr. Ruark is survived by her husband, Charles, and son, David.

A. Preston Russell, MD’66, HS’69, died Jan. 25. He was 79. Dr. Russell is survived by his children Lindsay and Alex; and five grandchildren.

David “Dave” M. Seitzman, BA’50, MD’54, died March 7. He was 92. Dr. Seitzman is survived by his wife, Rochelle; children Stephen and Mona; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bruce W. Stavens, MD’80, died March 6. He was 76. Dr. Stavens is survived by his wife, Carole, and son David.

Lawrence “Larry” T. Wagers, MD’65, died May 28. He was 80. Dr. Wagers is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter Rebecca; and three granddaughters.

Matthew Walker, III, PhD, University Faculty, died April 24. He was 56. He is survived by his wife, Anna, and son, Matthew.

Daniel “Dan” K. Winstead, MD’70, died Aug.10. He was 76. Dr. Winstead is survived by his children Laura and Nathaniel; and three grandchildren.

Robert W. Youngblood, Jr., BA’44, MD’47, HS ‘61, died Jan. 16. He was 90. Dr. Youngblood is survived by his wife, Peggy; children Robert and Lynn Youngblood; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Correction: Samuel R. Marney Jr., MD, HS’67, FE’73, Emer Fac-Med, died Jan. 7. He was 87. He was the founder of Vanderbilt’s Division of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Marney was predeceased by his loving wife, Betty, who died unexpectedly in May 2020, and is survived by his children, Samuel and Annis, and four grandchildren. (A previous obituary misidentified Dr. Marney’s wife.)
