In keeping with tradition, the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine first-year class held its White Coat Ceremony on Aug. 5. Despite a few aspects of the ceremony being altered due to physical distancing measures put in place with COVID-19, the students enjoyed the right of passage marking the beginning of their medical education journey.

Each year, the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine graduating fourth-year class honors one faculty member with the Shovel Award in recognition of the exceptionally meaningful impact he or she has had on their medical education.

When in-person visits to Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Clinic needed to be quickly converted to telehealth appointments in response to COVID-19, a novel solution was hatched to bring both clinicians and patients up to speed on videoconferencing.

COVID-19 — and the mandate for social distancing to curb its spread — has meant rethinking how nearly 400 Vanderbilt University School of Medicine students will master the clinical and didactic skills they need to stay on course.

The 8th Annual Shade Tree Clinic Benefit Dinner & Silent Auction will take place Thursday, Feb. 20, from 6 – 8:30 p.m. in the Student Life Center on Vanderbilt University’s campus.

Katie Cox Johnson, co-founder of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine’s Shade Tree Clinic, died Sept. 11. She was 38.
