The General Medicine unit on the third floor of the Round Wing of Medical Center North is celebrating more than four years without a catheter-associated urinary tract infection.

Mitch Edgeworth, MBA, CEO of Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital and Clinics, brought his senior leadership team to three locations on June 17 for an annual update of initiatives and successes.

An initiative to add beds in strategic locations throughout Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), decrease patients’ length of stay and focus on morning discharges is paying off with improved patient access to services, hospital leaders say.

Robin Steaban, MSN, R.N., VUMC associate chief nursing officer and chief administrative officer at the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute, has been promoted to the newly created position of Chief Nursing Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics. In addition, Mitchell Edgeworth, MBA, chief operating officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital, has been promoted to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer for Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics.

Over the next three years, Medicare will test a new payment arrangement that rewards participating hospitals when Medicare patients require fewer inpatient and post-discharge services, but extracts financial penalties when patients require more of these services.
