John Oates, MD, an internationally known physician at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and a founding father of the discipline of Clinical Pharmacology, died Tuesday (July 30) in Nashville after a short illness. He was 87.

Alice Ingram Hooker, a longtime supporter of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and former chair of their boards, died July 23 after an extended illness.

Joel Hardman, PhD, an internationally recognized scientist and educator who chaired the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine from 1975 to 1990, died June 30, 2019 in Hoosick Falls, New York, after a lengthy illness. He was 85.

George Holcomb Jr., MD, clinical professor of Surgery, emeritus, champion of the creation of a children’s hospital at Vanderbilt, and former executive director of Medical Alumni Affairs, died June 28. He was 97.

W. Bedford Waters, MD, current president of the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association and the second African American to graduate from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM), died May 25. He was 71.

Howard W. Jones III, MD, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, former chair of the department and a world-renowned researcher into the causes and treatment of gynecologic cancer, died unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday, March 9. He was 76.

Stephen Hann, PhD, professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, died Feb. 27. He was 67.
