Pierre Massion, MD, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair and Professor of Medicine, an internationally known expert on early detection and prevention strategies for lung cancer, died April 4 of an apparent heart attack. He was 58.

W. Faxon Payne, MD, who helped establish the outpatient radiology service at The Vanderbilt Clinic beginning in 1987 until his appointment as emeritus professor in 1995 and retirement in 2000, died Feb. 16. He was 95.

Samuel Rowe Marney Jr., MD, the founder of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Vanderbilt, died peacefully at home Jan. 7 with family at his side.

Jeffrey David Byers, MD, associate professor of Clinical Dermatology and vice chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Dermatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, died Jan. 9. He was 54.

Associate Professor of Nursing Kate Payne, JD, RN, NC-BC, a bioethicist, attorney and beloved nurse leader at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, died at the Alive Hospice Residence on Jan. 6 after a very brief and unexpected illness.

William Russell Ries, MD, professor of Otolaryngology and Carol and John S. Odess Professor of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, died Jan. 5. He was 67.

Geoffrey Fleming, MD, professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and Vice President of Vanderbilt University Medical Center Continuous Professional Development, died Dec. 8. He was 50.
