Rosemary Galloway, RN, works in the Medical/Cardiac unit at Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital. She is one of the latest Vanderbilt Health DAISY Award winners.

 From the nomination

“My father was admitted after his dementia rapidly progressed and resulted in an unexpected admission. I asked to speak with his nurse before going in to see him.  Rosemary sat with my mom and me for at least ten minutes. She reassured my mom that despite the best efforts, caring for a dementia patient is taxing and draining. She helped my mom and me come to accept that my father’s needs were outweighing what any one care provider could give and sustain it each day at home alone. Rosemary’s time and compassion helped my mom release the shame she felt that after 60 years of marriage, she needed help.

As a nurse myself, I know Rosemary exemplifies compassionate care not only for her patient but also for their family. Her reassurance to us meant something to me because I knew she was not only doing the task of her job to care for my dad, but she made time to support us during the difficulty of placing him in memory care after discharge. I am honored she cared for him because she is an outstanding example of compassionate care.”

About DAISY Awards

The DAISY Award is a recognition for extraordinary nurses who exemplify compassion toward patients and families.

Vanderbilt Health distributes the award in partnership with The DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 1999 to honor the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who died of complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Barnes’ family was moved by the care they received from his nurses and wanted to recognize them to preserve his memory. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Vanderbilt Health nurse committees determine the individual recipients. Previous recipients of the DAISY Award are here. The award is open to all licensed nurses, and anyone can nominate — including co-workers, patients and their families.
